Your New Website Is Live. Here Are the 10 Things to Do Next.
Getting a new website is exciting. But here's what most small business owners don't realize: launching the site is only the beginning. What you do in the days and weeks after go-live is what determines whether your website actually works for you — or just sits there looking pretty.
We see it all the time at ZING. A business owner gets their new site up (often through our Discover Plan), feels great about it, and then… nothing changes. No new leads. No uptick in calls. And they're left wondering what went wrong.
Usually, nothing went wrong exactly. They just didn't know what to do next.
So here it is — the 10 things we always tell new clients to do right after launch.
1. Claim and Optimize Your Google Business Profile
If you haven't already, claim your free Google Business Profile. This is the single most important thing a local business can do online. It's what makes you show up on Google Maps and in local search results.
Make sure your business name, address, phone number, and hours match exactly what's on your website. Google rewards consistency. Even a small mismatch — like "St." on your site and "Street" on Google — can hurt your local rankings.
2. Submit Your Site to Google Search Console
Google doesn't automatically know your site exists. You need to tell it. Google Search Console is a free tool that lets you submit your sitemap — basically a map of all your pages — so Google can index and rank your content faster.
This step alone can shave weeks off the time it takes for your site to start appearing in search results. It takes about 10 minutes and costs nothing.
3. Set Up Google Analytics
You can't improve what you don't measure. Google Analytics (now called GA4) is a free tool that shows you how many people are visiting your site, where they're coming from, which pages they spend the most time on, and where they drop off.
Even if you only check it once a month, this data will change how you think about your website. Over time, you'll start to see patterns — and those patterns tell you exactly where to focus your energy.
4. Add Your Website to Every Directory and Listing You Can Find
Think of online directories as digital word-of-mouth. Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, your local Chamber of Commerce website, and any industry-specific directories — all of these should have your website URL and consistent business information.
The more places your business appears online with accurate, matching information, the more Google trusts that you're a real, established business. That trust translates directly into better search rankings.
5. Get Your First Reviews
Reviews aren't just for restaurants. For any local business, Google reviews are one of the most powerful ranking signals out there. Businesses with more reviews consistently outrank competitors with fewer, even when the competitor has a nicer website.
Right after launch is the perfect time to ask your best existing customers for a review. Send a personal message — not a mass email blast. Tell them you just launched your new site and it would mean a lot if they shared their experience on Google. Most people are happy to help when asked directly.
6. Update All Your Social Media Profiles
Scroll through every social profile you have — Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, wherever your business lives — and make sure your website URL is front and center. This sounds basic, but you'd be surprised how many businesses launch a new site and forget to update the link in their Instagram bio.
While you're at it, pin a post announcing your new website. It's a free way to get traffic on day one.
7. Send an Email to Your Existing Customers
Your email list — even a small one — is one of your most valuable assets. People who have already done business with you are far more likely to refer you, come back, or leave a review than a cold stranger.
Send a short, personal email announcing your new website. Show them what's new or improved. Give them a reason to click — a seasonal offer, a new service, a helpful resource you've added to the site. Keep it brief and genuine.
8. Add Your Website to Your Email Signature
Every email you send is a marketing opportunity. If your website URL isn't in your email signature, you're leaving easy traffic on the table.
Add your URL, your phone number, and even a one-line description of what you do. For example: "Helping Castle Rock families find the perfect home | yoursite.com". Simple, professional, and effective.
9. Make Sure Your Site Is Mobile-Friendly (and Test It Yourself)
Over 60% of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your site doesn't look great on a phone, you're losing people before they even have a chance to learn about your business.
Pull up your website on your own phone. Navigate around it like a customer would. Is the text readable without zooming? Are the buttons easy to tap? Does the contact form work? At ZING, mobile-first is baked into everything we build — but it's always worth checking yourself on a real device.
10. Create a Simple Content Plan
Your website isn't a billboard. It should be a living, growing asset. That means adding fresh content over time — even if it's just one blog post or a new photo gallery every month.
Google rewards sites that are updated regularly. More importantly, fresh content gives people a reason to keep coming back. You don't need a complicated strategy. Just pick one topic that your customers frequently ask about, write 300-500 words on it, and publish it. Repeat monthly.
If that sounds like too much to manage on your own, that's exactly what our Boost Plan is built for.
The Bottom Line
A new website is one of the best investments a small business can make. But the businesses that get real results from their sites are the ones that treat launch day as a starting line, not a finish line.
Work through this list in your first 30 days and you'll be miles ahead of competitors who launched a site and walked away. If you want help making any of this happen, we're always here. Get started with ZING or explore our plans at zing.work — we'd love to help you get the most out of what you've built.
